Northern Emerald Somatochlora arctica

One of small, dark "bog emeralds". Found in the entire country, but local and uncommon in south coast. Becomes more common towards north and is quite numerous in Northern Finland.

Bogs, large swamps and moors, peatmoss lakes.

Flight period: June-August

Male. Bog emeralds are very dark, almost black. Northern Emerald's bright green eyes contrast markingly with the rest of the body. Notice the pincer-shaped anal appendages. Petri Metsälä
